Agenda Item - Select the Mayor Pro Tem in Secret

Well, that didn’t take long to get back to the same old, same old. It seems the council may go into executive session to select the new mayor pro tem even after both candidates said they would support selecting the mayor pro tem in open session. This will be a chance for our new mayor to stand up and do what she said she would do, discuss and select the Mayor Pro Tem in PUBLIC.

  1. I would be pleased and surprised to see Laura do the right thing on this.

It would be a great way to put some daylight between herself and the RC (which is why it probably won't happen).

  2. The RC controls the Council now. Is there really a need to follow through on promises to the citizens?

  3. I guess i do not understand why this blog and its main contributors are so determined for this pro-tem debate to be in public. Are you against all executive sessions?

    1. I don't think those who want open and transparent meetings need to explain. Those who want closed, secret meetings need to explain why they are necessary in each and every case.

So can you explain why the pro-tem discussion needs to be done in a meeting closed off to the public?

    2. In spite of the long corrupt practice of secret deliberations, election of the Mayor Pro-Tem is not a persoNNel issue covered by an exemption in the Open Meetings Act. It is, however, more of a persoNal matter.

There is no good reason for the election of the Mayor Pro-Tem to be deliberated in secret. The public should be privy to the merits of the discussion and process. Anything else is nothing more than a sham to keep the public out of the democratic process.

    3. The Mayor Pro-Tem has already been chosen behinds the scene with numerous calls to council members to convince them one way or another. The Coalition has selected Dunn has its candidate. Tonight's meeting will be token as the members cast their votes for a selection that has already taken place.

  4. First of all, it is about the Texas Open Meetings Act and the whole premise of government should be open and transparent. The segregated question on angst for all executive sessions is an interesting one. Do you think there is a time for executive session and how long should those discussions be kept secret?
