Vote No Is Here

So much for there not being a vote no campaign. It is here. Their flier pretty much illustrates how the charter changes happened, steamroller through.

  1. Great graphic. It is absolutely true and represents exactly what is happening as a result of this so call charter commission. I will vote no on every proposition as a result. I hope you do too.

  2. Proposition 3 calls for a special election to fill a mayor vacancy. It prevents the Council from hand-selecting a replacement, and puts the power in the hands of the voters to determine the next mayor.

So you're voting "no" on Proposition 3? Let me guess, you were also one of the mob who was angry that the council got to choose the mayoral replacement?

    This graphic is irresponsible fearmongering.

    1. You write as if there is only one chance to change any of this? It might behoove you to try to understand where some others are coming from before you call something "irresponsible fearmongering". Maybe there is something you do not know!
The council can put any issue back to the voters by calling a special election. They CHOSE not to do so. That spoke volumes to many.

This covers the first four propositions. Where might we find the other 79?

  3. We are voting NO for a proper charter commission to decide the rights of those who grant authority. In a social contract there are 2 parties. Those with the authority to determine who the city government conducts itself and the council to abide by those rules. Your choice of one item over the entire proper process is irresponsible. You read the actual language and you will see many times giving the council full authority to do ______. NOT ACCEPTABLE! Vote No and then take proper action for a charter commission formation.

  4. Personally, I feel that this "vote no" campaign (as a true grassroots citizen movement) carries much more credibility than a "vote yes" campaign being spread by the city using taxpayer funds to lobby the citizens.

  5. Anon (Sept 28 @ 8pm), is it your expectation that the city should spring a charter election on citizens with no attempt to announce or explain it? Some folks blast the city for not being transparent and also blast the city when it tries to be informative. Crazy, huh?

    1. Chapter 9 of local government code calls for how a charter commission is formed. It also tells you that if this is a first charter commission there are other ways of garnering a commission. But this was not a first commission. Yes, the city can recommend changes. 83 changes is a re-write.
Mr Spruoll, who is compensated by taxpayer funds has overstepped his bounds as bot a citizen supported by taxpayer funds (REDP) and as the head of the chamber of commerce whose own by-laws do not allow for opinions in elections period. Except by his own private vote. Informative was not the intent when they took the entire commission upstairs CM conference room and did not record it.

    2. You write of promotional efforts by a person who is not city staff or elected official. Some folks would agree with your concern and others would disagree. But, you digress and fail to address the point of how it can't be inappropriate for the city to provide information about the Charter election. In Council meeting it was clearly articulated that comments from Council and staff would need to be informational only and not advocate for passage.

Sproull get paid via taxpayer funds. He is heading up a lobbying effort to pass the bond and pass the charter changes. Duh!

  7. There are plenty of anti democratic additions in the charter. The changes make it harder for citizens to do a petition and effectively eliminates recalls. Of course recall is still there but it is now so cumbersome that nobody will attempt it.
